Episode summary
Lorelai has been waiting for Rory to phone her and tell her that Logan has proposed to her. She's also deeply embarassed about the much talked about serenade to Luke - the whole town is buzzing with the news.
Luke goes to his sister Liz to get a graduation present for Rory. Not only does he get that, he also gets a necklace for Lorelai, with the excuse that it is a backup gift for Rory, in case she doesn't like the earrings he initially wants to give her. Liz being Liz of course tells him that the song had to mean something - Luke however feels that if it meant something to Lorelai, she should have said something by now.
At Luke's diner, Lorelai proceeds to explain to Patty and Babette that the song didn't mean anything - she was just drunk. Luke enters in time to hear her denying its meaning, and becomes very abrupt with her. Lorelai now thinks that she didn't just embarass herself, but him as well, by singing that song.
As Rory can get only a certain amount of tickets to her Yale graduation, Lorelai has to tell the citizens of Stars Hollow (at an extraordinary town meeting, no less!) that they can't come to see Rory graduate. They are all gobsmacked, but eventually they settle with the promise that a re-enactment of the graduation will be held in Stars Hollow, post-Yale graduation.
At the Gilmore residence, Emily and Richard are throwing Rory a graduation
party. Christopher is there, and he and Lorelai thus meet for the first
time since their separation. To their great relief, they're able to converse
and be friendly. Lorelai tells Chris about Logan's plans to propose to Rory.
Inside, Emily and Richard have something special planned in Rory's honour
- a song! Rory then gives a short speech thanking her grandparents for everything
they've done for her. Logan comes up to her, and finally he proposes (much
to Lorelai and Christopher's surprise - they'd never thought he'd propose
in front of all those people!). Rory is taken aback and then some, and takes
Logan outside to talk to him. She needs time to think, and who better to
think with than Lorelai? Rory begs Lorelai to tell her what to do, but Lorelai
tells her that this is her decision alone, and she alone must make it.
Back in Stars Hollow, Lorelai goes for a walk to clear her head about the whole Rory-Logan thing, and runs into Luke. They talk for a bit, and he gives her the present for Rory - leaving the necklace he bought behind in the drawer.
Graduation day arrives, and Rory gets her diploma. A big day for her and
Lorelai alike. Emily, Richard and Christopher are also present at the graduation.
After pictures, Rory goes to talk to Logan. After a lot of thinking she
has decided that she can't say yes to his proposal. He tells her it is all
or nothing, and that he won't try long distance. Rory returns the ring to
him, he says goodbye and walks away...
At the apartment, Rory and Lorelai are packing up the last of Rory's stuff,
as Paris and Doyle have allready moved out. Rory is missing Logan allready,
and feels that the breakup has ruined the happy day her graduation day should
have been. Lorelai tells her she thinks she made the right decision, and
that one day she'll meet the right person, and she won't hesitate if he
proposes.
Nostalgia hits Rory as she picks up the last box and turns to look at the
now empty apartment.
